“WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?” Sal asked as soon as Brenna disappeared from the garage. He picked up a sandwich and sat down in the desk chair to eat it.

Thomas shrugged. “I don’t know. Guess she wanted to see the garage.” He took a sandwich and dropped onto the couch, putting his feet up on the chair across from him.

Sal shook his head. “That’s not what I’m talking about and you know it. There was obviously something brewing between you two when I showed up. You don’t waste any time, do you lad?”

“I just met Raven Black,” Thomas said. The bitter irony of that truth hit his heart like a sledge. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“It’s not a matter of how long you’ve known the woman; it’s the charisma between you two. If I could feel it, you two most definitely could,” He chuckled and bit into his sandwich.

Thomas didn’t argue. His feelings for Brenna weren’t going away, but whether or not Brenna felt the same was anyone’s guess. Sal seemed to think so, but he didn’t know the circumstances. With all the baggage she carried, could things ever turn out the way he’d hoped when he met her? He had no idea how to deal with the hurt she’d lived through, much less the trouble she was in now. Only God could heal a spirit that broken.

“I’m sorry if I embarrassed you, Thomas. I’m an old man. I tend to live vicariously these days.” Sal leaned back in the chair and put his hands behind his head. “She certainly is a beautiful woman.”

“She is that,” he agreed standing up. He swallowed the last of his croissant. It felt as though it was stuck in his throat. “Is there anything else you need me to do this afternoon? If not, I could use a couple of hours to run errands.”

Sal’s gaze was a little too penetrating for comfort. He leaned forward with his elbows on the desktop. “No, go on and take care of your personal matters. I’ll try to think of something for you to do when you get back.”

There wasn’t much for him to do around here. Plowing snow and chipping ice didn’t take all day. Thomas had already thrown snow off the roof, scooped the pond for skating, and even took the cars one at a time to be washed at the Super Mermaid Carwash. What would he do for the rest of the week?

Brenna wanted him to leave, wanted him to disappear so she wouldn’t feel responsible if something happened to him. Did she really care what happened to him or was she just worried he would mess up her plans to spy on Giordano?

Earlier, when she’d climbed into the car with the kids and met his gaze in the rearview mirror, he knew his feelings for her were unchanged. He was in love with her. There was no going back. He could walk away and try to forget her, but he doubted it were possible.
